Stressful life events or trauma — such as the death or illness of a loved one, divorce, or a job loss — also may lead to insomnia.Acute Insomnia can be environmental and stress related. Uncomfortable bed or mattress, excessive noise or light, extremes of temperature can be some reasons which lead to sleeplessness and cause discomfort to the sufferer. Some symptoms of insomnia can be:- difficulty in falling asleep at night, disturbed sleep, waking up early, irritability, poor concentration, frequent headaches, excessive worrying and increased risk of depression.

There are mainly three types of insomnia:-

*Acute Insomnia is  short term which may last upto one month. It is also known as adjustment insomnia.This occurs due to work, deadline, or exams.

*Transient Insomnia lasts for less than one week. This may be due to change in sleep environment, stress or depression.

*Chronic Insomnia is the worst of all as it lasts for more than one month.In some cases it becomes chronic. It is associated with chronic medical and psychiatric conditions.This usually occurs in patients with an underlying risk of insomnia.

Other types of insomnia include Insomnia due to mental disorders, medications like respiratory medications, hormonal medication, medication stimulating the central nervous system , behavioural problems of childhood and use of excessive caffeine, smoking, alcohol and hard drugs.
